Small hive beetle: new outbreak in Calabria, off Red Zone
|
Grimaldi (Cosenza) - 26 July 2016. From the rumors to the news, now almost official.
It took a few hours, half a day, because some summary advances were in
the evening their timely confirmation: a new hive beetle outbreak was
found in Calabria, to officially inform Francesco Artese in his capacity
as President of the territorial headquarters of FAI Calabria . The apiary concerned,
located in the territory of Grimaldi - City in the province of Cosenza, on the border with the province of Catanzaro, that is about 90 km from the area of protection - would be owned by a beekeeper Zafferana Etnea (CT), never surveyed and whose hives are not present in the National data Bank. According to a statement by the beekeeper, the hives are in Calabria for some time; the State Forestry Department appears to be investigating - even with audits conducted in Sicily - the accuracy of that statement. Nell'apiario infested was found to contain only adult small hive beetle and the second still in force Decree n. 94/2014 of the Region of Calabria is to be expected that procedures will soon be launched for its destruction, this time with no refunds, given the lack of ownership of hives complaint. Were also already launched intensified checks on other apiaries present in Grimaldi area with guided inspections by Dr. Franco Mutinelli (in his capacity as director of the National Reference Centre for Diseases of the Bees for the Ministry of Health). This new finding blows up the possibility of a different strategy - an alternative to the destruction of the entire apiary seen that the findings so far kept only in the Red Zone - that lay ahead recently in ministerial circles. The case of Grimaldi also highlights the lack of movement control of bees and the incompleteness of the Bank Apistica data. If beekeepers unholy, without talking to the institutions, enliven the bees along the boot Italy, they will transport the length and breadth of the small hive beetle beetle rendering useless any attempt at territorial containment. It is hoped that the Ministry of Health has already prepared an action plan for this new situation but they are, as usual, many beekeepers honest to "pay a pledge" Because of a few dishonest not definable beekeepers. All the rumors were confirmed and the first apiary infested with small hive beetle, out of the "Red Zone" bounded around two years ago in Gioia Tauro (Reggio Calabria), has been destroyed. The first day has gone by so in this little town that looks towards the Sila Amantea, the famous sea destination. Now you know that the find was made possible thanks to the voluntary reporting of Beekeepers of the territory concerned that have called attention to the presence of hives are not reported; reports which follow the coordinated actions between the Veterinary Services of the ASL of Cosenza and that of Zafferana Etnea (CT), with the support of the operational departments of the Forestry Department and the Carabinieri. Owner, we do a lot of effort to define "beekeeper", you know that is a resident of Zafferana, in the province of Catania, has never been surveyed by the health authorities, and has never denounced their hives (which would be about 200 and 20 swarms, unless further investigation) that, therefore, there are no data in the Bank dell'Anagrafe Apistica National. His 12 nuclei, in which veterinarians have found adult specimens of small hive beetle (photos posted on Facebook are just another hoax than usual joker) were immediately subjected to a decree of killing and destruction, and the ground surrounding the apiary is It has been reclaimed as required by the current health protocol. The controls in the affected area have meanwhile continued to infestation and gave evidence of two further outbreaks in as many locations of about 40 beehives: these also are not counted and always head to the same owner! The Ministry of Health, meanwhile, has set up an extended protection zone for a 10-kilometer radius of the first outbreak. Here all hives present will have to be controlled, and this is nothing if not a second "Red Zone". But the responsibilities of such an upheaval of who they are? And 'likely to think that the Sicilian owner has freely moved his bees from Sicily to Calabria, he has entered and has shifted to productive ends inside the "Red Zone" in search of the harvest of orange blossoms, and then get out and go to look for other areas productive, perhaps on chestnut seen the recent discovery in Sila, without ever a health check departing, arriving and transit've intercepted it? It is possible, without controls is entirely possible, and even the opposite of everything.
