Aethina tumida: the EU Commission also blocks Sicily
The European Commission, on 10 September 2019, adopted Implementation
Decision (EU) 2019/1399 "which amends the 2014/909 / EU execution
decision regarding the list of areas subject to protection measures
relating to the small beehive beetle in Italy ". The provision was published in the Official Journal of the European Union n. 253/3 of 12.09.2019. The Decision in question, as a result of the encroachment of Aethina tumida from Calabria to Sicily, which Italy notified to the European Union on 21 June 2019, establishes that the entire Sicily region should be classified as "Area subject to protection measures" pursuant to Execution Decision 2014/909 / EU "concerning certain protection measures following the confirmed presence of the small hive beetle in Italy". It is worth mentioning, in this regard, what are the "Protection Measures" already in force in Calabria and now also extended to Sicily: a) prohibition of shipping consignments of honey bees, hornets (Editor's note: here perhaps the translation offices have confused the bumblebees destined for pollination service), unprocessed apiculture by-products (honey, beeswax, royal jelly, propolis , pollen, not intended for human consumption and which have not been subjected to any processing procedure), beekeeping equipment (used hives, parts of hives and tools used in beekeeping activities), honey combs for human consumption; b) immediate inspection and epidemiological investigations with identification and control of the movements of the products "to and from" the apiaries and honey extraction establishments located in an area within 20 km from the hives infested with Aethina tumida; notify the Commission of the results of these inspections. Furthermore, Italy will have to carry out further inspections and epidemiological investigations including the control of the movement of products "to and from" the entire territory of the Calabria region and of the Sicily region. The FAI-Italian Beekeepers Federation, in giving notice to its territorial referents, recommended "the implementation of the necessary action to raise awareness of the membership base in order to ensure compliance with the requirements set by the Commission; as well - the FAI note states - active collaboration with the competent Health Authorities is also recommended in order to know the data referring to the epidemiological investigations that they will want to have with the associated Beekeepers ". • Read EU Decision 2019/1399
